Music at Abington Vale
At Abington Vale Primary School, it is our intention to enable our children to learn about and understand the musical world that they live in so that they can enjoy music and appreciate musical experiences and the diversity of the different genres around the world. We acknowledge that excellent music education opens opportunities and gives children and young people an opportunity to express themselves, to explore their creativity, to work hard at something, persevere and shine. These experiences and achievements stay with them and shape their lives. It is important that at Abington Vale, we enable all children to perform, listen to, review and evaluate music. In addition, we value the opportunities to sing, create and compose music. As a school, we are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge and experiences to involve themselves in music in a variety of different contexts. We aim to help them appreciate and respect the music in local and wider communities and the importance it plays.
At Abington Vale Primary School, we follow the SingUp Music curriculum. Our children engage in alternate terms of SingUp Music units (where lessons are taught for 1 hour each week), followed by units following the BBC 10 pieces programme, where the children will listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians (National Curriculum (aims) 2014).
Our music curriculum is designed to provide access and opportunity for all children who attend our school. Every child is an individual and we pride ourselves on our ability to adapt both the curriculum and our teaching, as necessary, to ensure that every child can be included in every learning experience that we offer in every year group.
